You want to store money, important documents and valuables with a high financial or emotional (and therefore irreplaceable) value safely, protected against theft. A high-quality European certified burglar-resistant cabinet or safe offers you the required protection and therefore the desired security. Good burglar-resistant safes and cabinets are tested according to European standards such as EN 14450 and EN 1143-1. During testing, one or more openings are made by testers who have relevant knowledge, skills and burglary tools.

EN 1143-1 - Safes, safe doors and safe walls - Grade 0 to XIII

Safes with a European standard can be recognized by the metal plate on the inside of the door. This states which standard and resistance class the safe complies with. Always ask your insurer which standard and class your safe must meet.
Insurers link an amount of cash value to the various resistance classes as an indication of the cover. This is based on the storage of cash in a burglar-resistant safe which is located in uninhabited, unguarded and unsecured buildings within built-up areas. Depending on the security measures taken, insurers can deviate from the cover indication. Many insurers only provide a cover indication or value storage indication.
The NCP, in collaboration with the VGW, has set up a system to be able to compare the home safes in a fair way. This NCP classification has classes SAFE 1 to SAFE 4. The current EN 14450 standard replaces this way of classification. The Working Group Inscaling Safes has been out of action for a long time now. The last edition of the booklet Coverage Indications for safes & safe doors dates back to June 2001. Many products that have received a SAFE indication after this date are questionable because the manufacturer has done this themselves.
As of January 1, 2016, the SAFE 1,2,3 and 4 designation will no longer be recognized! This designation was created at the time as a bridge to the current European standard EN 14 450.
The European standards are performance standards. This means that the standard does not describe how the safe is constructed, but what resistance the safe must have in the event of an attack. During the testing of the safe, the safe is opened as soon as possible. Then a mathematical formula is released on the factors of time and tools, resulting in a resistance class.
The various tests are performed manually. The standard does not describe how strong and how skilled the tester must be. As a result, the results of the different test institutes are different.
It is the intention that safes from different institutes can be compared with each other. Two European organizations (EFSG & ECB-S) have therefore drawn up rules to enable comparable tests to be carried out. These institutes check each other's test data, among other things.
The EFSG has a Multilateral Agreement with the test and certification institutes to verify and accept each other's test results. Certification of the safes is arranged decentrally by the various certification institutes. Safes can be recognized by the VdS, CNPP, SBSC or ICIM plate on the inside of the door.
The main EFSG members are:
Other EFSG members who do not perform vault tests:
Building Research Establishment (BRE) (former LPCB)
London United Kingdom
The ECB-S is an independent certification organization where the test reports of approved test institutes are assessed. Certification of the safes is centrally controlled by ECB-S. Safes can be recognized by the ECB-S plate on the inside of the door.
The ECB-S approved test institutes are:

The money and value storage association (VGW) advises to properly anchor safes up to a weight of 1.000 kg, so that they offer sufficient resistance to being taken away quickly. In 91% of the burglaries where a safe is found, it was taken instead of opened on the spot.
Don't take any chances and anchor your safe!
The segment anchor is supplied as standard with your safe. This is the lightest anchor in the Van den Hoven range for a concrete base.
Extraction value in kg: | 560 |
Drill diameter in mm: | Ø12 |
Drilling depth in mm: | 65 |
Minimum floor thickness in mm: | 90 |
The heavy-duty anchor has a higher pull-out value than the segment anchor, fits tightly in the anchoring hole, and can be disassembled again after assembly, making it ideal for safes with floor and wall anchoring.
Extraction value in kg: | 900 |
Drill diameter in mm: | Ø14 |
Drilling depth in mm: | 85 |
Minimum floor thickness in mm: | 100 |
The anchor rod with chemical paste has the highest pull-out value and does not create any tension in the floor and/or wall. The glass tubes with anchor rods can be installed without special tools. All you need is a drill and a hammer.
Extraction value in kg: | 1600 |
Drill diameter in mm: | Ø14 |
Drilling depth in mm: | 110 |
Minimum floor thickness in mm: | 150 |
If floor and wall anchoring must both be chemically anchored, we recommend using anchor rods with chemical paste in the floor and an anchor rod with chemical sleeve for the back. Special tools are required for mounting the chemical sleeve and can only be performed by Van den Hoven.
Extraction value in kg: | 1500 |
Drill diameter in mm: | Ø22 |
Drilling depth in mm: | 100 |
Minimum floor thickness in mm: | 150 |
Heavy duty anchors are used as standard for mechanical anchoring by Van den Hoven. For chemical anchoring, anchor rods with chemical paste with a higher pull-out value are used as standard than the glass impact anchors.
Proper anchoring of the safe is only possible with a solid foundation. Choose a suitable location for your safe on a concrete floor and/or against a concrete wall. For lighter safes, anchoring in the floor and wall is best. Take into account the disassembly of the safe: when only anchor rods with chemical paste are used, it is not possible to release the safe from the anchoring afterwards.
All VDH safes under 1.000 kg are equipped with at least two anchoring holes in the bottom as standard. We recommend chemically anchoring your safe because this gives the highest pull-out value and because these anchors are placed tension-free.
