Classification of safes and safes

Money, important documents and valuables with a high financial or emotional (and therefore irreplaceable) value you want to store safely, protected against theft. A high-quality, European-certified burglary-resistant cabinet or safe offers you the protection you need and thus the security you want. Good burglary-resistant safes and cabinets are tested in accordance with European standards such as EN 14450 and EN 1143-1. During testing, one or more openings are made by testers with relevant knowledge, skill and burglary tools.

European standards

EN 14450 - Home safes - Security level 1 to 2
EN 1143-1 - Safes, safe doors and safe walls - Grade 0 to XIII
EN 1143-2 - Safes with deposit drawer - Grade 0 to IV

Safes with a European standard can be recognised by the metal plate on the inside of the door. This plate states which standard and resistance class the safe meets. Always ask your insurer which standard and class your safe must meet.

Coverage indication

Insurers link an amount of cash value to the various resistance classes as an indication of the cover. This assumes cash is stored in a burglary-resistant safe located in uninhabited, unguarded and unsecured premises in built-up areas. Depending on the security measures taken, insurers may deviate from the cover indication Many insurers only give a cover indication or an indication of the storage value.

NCP standardisation

The NCP, in cooperation with the VGW, has set up a system to compare home-safes in a fair way. This NCP grading has the classes SAFE 1 to SAFE 4. The current EN 14450 standard replaces this way of grading. Meanwhile, the Safes Classification Working Group has not been active for a long time. The last edition of the booklet Covering Safes & Safe Doors dates back to June 2001. Many products given a SAFE indication after this date are dubious because the manufacturer did this himself.

Write-down SAFE 1 to 4 as at 1 January 2016

With effect from 1 January 2016, the designation SAFE 1,2,3 and 4 is no longer recognised! This designation was created at the time as a bridge to the current European standard EN 14 450.

Testing and certification

European standards are performance standards. This means that the standard does not describe how the safe is constructed but what resistance the safe must have in the event of an attack. During testing, the safe is opened as quickly as possible. A mathematical formula is then applied to the factors of time and tools, resulting in a resistance class.

The various tests are performed manually. The standard does not specify the strength and skill of the tester. As a result, the results of the different test institutes are different.

The idea is that safes from different institutes can be compared. Two European organisations (EFSG & ECB-S) have therefore drawn up rules for carrying out comparable tests. Among other things, these institutes check each other's test data.

EFSG = European Fire and Security Group

The EFSG has a Multilateral Agreement with the testing and certification institutes to verify and accept each other's test results. Certification of safes is decentralised by the various certification institutes. Safes can be recognised by the VdS, CNPP, SBSC or ICIM plate on the inside of the door.

ECB-S = European Certification Boards-Security

The ECB-S is an independent certification organisation where test reports from approved test institutes are assessed. Certification of safes is arranged centrally by ECB-S. Safes can be recognised by the ECB-S plate on the inside of the door.
